News from the Jubilee Centre – October 2013

It is with great regret that the Trustees announce a new pricing structure, effective 1st October 2013.

The new 3-tier structure is for everyone who uses our Centres depending on their level of use and we have already written to our existing Clients advising them of these new prices:

Day rate – includes transport, tea/coffee, most daily social activities and lunch…………….£10.00

Drop-in rate – includes tea/coffee, most daily social activities and lunch…………………….. £ 6.50

Activity rate – includes tea/coffee, activities such as arts & crafts, exercises, singing etc. £ 2.

This action was necessary because of financial circumstances beyond our control, due in a very large part, to the cuts in the grant funding we receive from Kent County Council (KCC) which have amounted to 45% in the last few years – with the promise of more to come. In applying this type of charge, we are following the lead of other Age UKs who face similar hardships due to the cuts in local authority funding.

To streamline their own administration, KCC are seeking to reduce the number of organisations they deal with and consequently Age UK and Age Concern Trustees grouped together to form locality Consortiums where a lead Age UK receives the Grant and shares it with the other members. Our local Consortium is with Folkestone, Romney Marsh and Ashford & Tenterden.

KCC is undecided whether to continue with straightforward funding for the core day care services or whether to put it all out to tender. We have lived with this uncertainty for several years now but are advised that funding will be available for 2014 and that we can then expect a decision for 2015 onwards.

If KCC do decide to put the Day Care services out to competitive tender, Age UKs in Kent will have to band together as one unit to make a viable Bid to win the Contract, in the same way as other interested parties including local, national or international commercial companies.

Therefore, Age UKs in Kent agreed a process where the Bid will come from a lead group of Age UKs whose organisations are on a sound financial footing and whose Trustees have the skills required to put the bid together. A list of criteria was agreed and organisations invited to become members. (Age UK Hythe and Lyminge did not apply as it could not meet the financial requirements and its Management and Trustees did not feel they had the necessary skills in competitive tendering). After winning a Contract, the services will be sub-contracted to eligible Age UKs and a separate list of criteria has been agreed which everyone must meet.

When Lyminge and Hythe merged in 11, both organisations were deeply “in the red” and by introducing new services the organisation succeeded in halving that deficit. Unfortunately, the extra income is now being swallowed up by increased costs for food, fuel and power and our situation has grown steadily worse.

Because of these factors, our Charity does not meet the financial criteria agreed for sub-contractors and if the situation does not improve, will therefore lose its KCC funding. The Trustees intend that the changes along with a detailed examination of our costs, will allow us to recover and go forward to the challenging times ahead.

We would like to thank all our Supporters, Clients, loyal staff and volunteers and the local communities of Lyminge and Hythe who support us in countless ways, for their understanding.

Both Centres have volunteering opportunities and whatever your skills, would love to hear from you if you have a few hours to spare. In particular, Hythe are looking for helpers in their charity shop areas, someone with knowledge of admin or searching for grants, weekday and weekend drivers for Meals on Wheels deliveries, a weekend kitchen assistant, and a weekend receptionist.  If you can help in either centre, please call 01303 269602 where our lovely receptionist will point you in the right direction.

Diary Dates: Lyminge Charity Shop will be Open Sunday 13th & Saturday 19th October – come and bag a bargain! – and the Christmas Fair will be on Friday 22nd November.

For more information about any of our activities or services please call 01303 269602 and ask for Matthew or Sue or why not just pop in and see us?

In July, our Clients had a great time in two special singing sessions and we would all like to thank Lyminge Larks, led by Matthew Raisbeck, for encouraging them to make such a beautiful noise!

The Cookery Class will start to make Christmas Cakes from 25th September and anybody wishing to join in can make a cake; we ask for £6.50 as a contribution towards the ingredients. Currently, we need help in the kitchen for an hour on Monday mornings, 9-10am, for prepping vegetables; volunteer drivers for the small minibus most days and, a volunteer driver to take some of our Clients on their weekly Shopping Trip to either Tesco or Morrisons at 11am on Thursdays, collecting them at 1pm and taking them, and their shopping, home. Please contact Matt or Sue if you can help us with any of these.

Does your local group need an evening venue? Our Dining Room and Café are now available for hire on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings. The cost is £5 per hour, minimum 2 hours.

News from the Jubilee Centre….. August 2013

Charity Shop: By the time you read this, the work to create a more permanent shop area should be finished. To celebrate, the shop will be open on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays in August and September.

As part of the service we offer to our Community, we will be having a large notice board for village events so if you belong to a local group or society, we would be pleased to display your posters.

Do you know that the Centre sells tickets for the Lyminge Gardeners’ Society events? We would like to offer this service to all village groups for their events or outings – contact Matt for information.

Chiropody: This month we are saying goodbye to one of our stalwarts. Our chiropodist, Christine Hughes, is leaving us after many many years on 28th August and while we are really sorry to see her go, we wish her happiness in her semi retirement.

The chiropody service will continue with Ian Cox, who will be starting with us on September 11th. We will be introducing changes to both the appointment system and our services, for instance, a 15 minute toenail cutting appointment is £11 or a full 30 minute chiropody appointment will be £17.

We still have a few places available on our coach trip to Frogmore House and Savill Gardens on 24th September. The Centre is able to meet the coach cost for its Clients thanks to funds given for the purpose so the cost to Centre-users is just £16. This outing is open to local people of any age at a cost of £26 – we think you will agree that this is amazing value!

Charity Events: We are thinking of holding occasional fundraising events in the Centre and are looking for volunteers to help us run them. We would also be grateful for any ideas you may have. Please contact the Centre if you can help.

Don’t forget:

The Singing for Health sessions held on the 4th Friday of the month at 11am – 12 noon, except August. The next one is on 27th September. Come and Sing with us, you’ll feel a lot better – don’t be shy, there are no auditions here!

News from the Jubilee Centre….. July 2013

Charity Shop: We are delighted at the way so many local people are supporting our venture and by their generous donations of items to sell.  We have noticed that some items are being left outside when we are closed and while we are grateful for the items, this could be a fire hazard and also, could attract the wrong sort of attention. Please help us by only leaving items if the shop is open. We are able to collect donations from Lyminge and the surrounding villages if you cannot bring it to us. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 3.30pm.

The next Clothes Sale is on Monday July 1st. These Mad Monday Sales are held on the first Monday of every month (except for Bank Holidays), so why not come and bag a bargain?

All sale items are 50p!

We are serving refreshments at the Bladbean Stud Open Days on Sunday 28th July and Sunday 6th October.  We still need donations of cakes for 28th July… Can you bake one for us?  Please call and ask for Donna

November 2012

We have spent the last few months telling you about life in the Jubilee Centre and there is no doubt about what makes it such a fantastic resource for older people and their families – it is our amazing Volunteers. They come from all walks of life and have an unbelievably wide range of skills between them.

One reason why we can offer such a wide range of activities for our clients to take part in is because many of them are led by our fully trained Volunteers. They get involved in everything from Arts and Crafts to surfing the net; from Quizzes and Bingo to cookery sessions.

Volunteers help to run the Centre too, driving clients or meals on wheels deliveries, serving in the Café or Charity Shop, and “backroom” jobs like helping in the Kitchen or sorting donations, doing the laundry or clerical work – volunteers get involved with them all!

All our Volunteers are trained so they can be confident in the Centre and interacting with Clients and we are currently in need Volunteers to for the following:

Volunteer drivers:
Monday and Friday: Driving the clients to and from the Centre
Thursday:  Meals on Wheels delivery

Centre Volunteers:
Monday 9am to 12pm – preparing veg, serving in the Café, helping with activities

If you like the sound of being a Volunteer please call 01303 269602 and ask for Matthew or Sue. Also, the number is the same if you would like to try out any of our activities or services or why not just pop in and see us?

“Aren’t you supposed to be a Charity?”

Life in the Jubilee Centre can be quite difficult sometimes and recently we have been asked why we make charges for our services when we are getting “all this funding from everywhere – aren’t you taking advantage of the old folk?”   So this month we thought we would let you know some of our daily facts of life.

Age UK Hythe and Lyminge is an Independent Charity. We are not a branch of Age UK, the national charity, and do not receive funds from them. Also, contrary to popular belief, we are not funded by the Government or the NHS but we do get a grant towards our core services from Kent County Council although this has been severely reduced over the last few years and will continue to be reduced each year for the foreseeable future.

When Age Concern Lyminge joined forces with Age Concern Hythe to form our new Charity the whole organisation was strengthened. Since then, we have introduced a range of new (chargeable) services and because of our hardworking staff and dedicated volunteers we are in a better position jointly than we were individually. We subsidise those services we consider essential to the wellbeing of our clients but must make a small charge on others. In most cases the charges we make are nowhere near what similar services would cost in the open marketplace but they must cover our costs and hopefully make a contribution towards Day Centre running costs.

We work hard on our fundraising with collection boxes locally; our Friends of Age UK Hythe and Lyminge scheme where supporters make a monthly donation by Direct Debit with the opportunity to Gift Aid it, thus making their donations go even further; Legacies; our newly opened Charity Shop; and, our 100+ Club where for £12, members can purchase a number which is entered into 12 monthly draws, each with the opportunity to win one of three prizes (£25, £15 or £10) which are doubled in December – just as a thank you!
